The Center for Academic Achievement administers placement and diagnostic tests in Math, English, and reading or critical thinking to incoming traditional, transfer, Adult Degree Center, and Hill Education Center students to determine their appropriate starting points in their areas.
Traditional Freshmen Placement Testing
When you come to Carlow's campus this spring or summer, you will take two to four tests that evaluate essential foundational skills that are important for success in college. The test results will be used:
- to identify students who would benefit from specific developmental coursework that focuses on the foundational skills, and/or
- to identify the appropriate starting point in mathematics, and/or
- to become part of your baseline assessment information
Be sure to bring the Testing and Registration schedule (with your Carlow University ID number) when you come on the assigned date. This schedule indicates the date and time that testing will begin, as well as the other activities planned for the day.
Individualized Testing
Testing schedules, testing rooms, and the number and kinds of tests that students take will vary because the testing process at Carlow is individualized and based on a review of each student's high school academic profile and chosen major at Carlow. Our goal is to provide you with the best starting point in your college education.
All students will:
• Take online Sentence Skills and Reading Comprehension tests.
• Compose an essay in response to one of several general topics to demonstrate writing and organizational skills (Microsoft Word)
You will be asked to compose your essay at a computer using Microsoft Word. If you are unfamiliar with Word or word processing in general, please immediately notify your test proctor who will make the materials available to you in alternate form. For a list of criteria used in evaluating essays, click on the link to the Essay Evaluation Checklist
Most students will:
Many students across all majors will take tests in mathematics, particularly computation. Most students entering a program offered through the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics will take a test in college level mathematics.
*No calculators are permitted in any of the mathematics tests, so be certain that you have practiced a wide range of problems without a calculator.
The scores from the baseline essay and other tests will then be used to identify any courses in addition to the core curriculum that would be appropriate for you.
Format for Objective Testing
Accuplacer computerized testing will be used for all subjects except writing.
